Child pornography and sexual abuse of children is a growing problem in Faroe Islands!
The figures in the picture are from the latest statistical report by the Faroese Police for 2024. It is sad to see this trend and we cannot ignore it. According to the police, it is especially child pornography that is the reason for the large increase.
Child sexual abuse is a horrible act. Whether it is done in secret or posted on the Internet. At the same time, we hear that the perpetrators who abuse children in this way receive a very lenient sentence. As a Member of Parliament, I want to do my part to ensure that the punishment is commensurate with these evil acts against innocent children.
In connection with cases of child pornography, it is worth pointing out that the punishment that the offenders receive is often shorter than the time it takes the Faroese police to look through the child pornographic material! And it’s not fun material to go through…
I also want to make sure that the Faroese Police have the necessary tools to find the criminals. Technology is developing at a rapid pace, which makes it easier for criminals to hide child pornography if the Faroese Police do not receive up-to-date authorizations and up-to-date equipment for the task.
At the same time, children are very vulnerable to pornography themselves and become addicted to it. This gives them a completely prejudiced picture of the relationship between husband and wife. In addition, they become even more exposed to sexual abuse, as this is normalized by the porn industry.
Parents have a great responsibility in this regard, but as a Member of Parliament, I do not think we can ignore the fact that the national authorities are doing even more to protect children against these difficulties.
