Dog football once again achieved a major international feat

With a fantastic second half, the Faroe Islands won 35-28 against Romania and have thus won Group F in the World Cup qualifiers in Poland. Now Denmark and France are waiting in the main round.

The Faroese attack started the game well, and our team took the lead in the first minute. The Faroe Islands defended far ahead against the big Romanians in an attempt to stop their long-range shooters. However, it took a while before the defense started with the goalkeepers. Although the teams filled up, it was more often that ours were ahead by one. 10 minutes before halftime was some of the adversity, where our team got more marginal penalties against, and Rókur Ziskason also got a red card. Romania had the upper hand for a while, but our team rose again just before halftime. Tóki Fríðriksson came into defense together with Búi Poulsen and improved the defensive play at the same time as Sasha had some saves in the goal. Ours were confident at the other end, and the Faroe Islands went to halftime ahead 18-15.

The Faroe Islands took the lead in the second half from the start and increased the lead to 5 goals after a short while. The defense stood well together and Sasha also had saves in the case. In the attack, Niklas Gaard got a place on the right wing and made a real difference for the Romanians with 6 goals in the second half. The Romanians tried 7 against 6, but they didn’t master this game as well as we did. The game was almost decided with an 8-point lead only 10-12 minutes before the end of the game, and ours drove it home at the last minute. It ended 35-27.

After the match, Niklas Gaard was voted the best player of the match. The Romanians packed Óli Mittún well today, and then there was room elsewhere on the pitch, and there was Niklas Gaard ice cold on the right wing. He scored 8 goals in 10 attempts.

The Faroe Islands have now advanced to the main round as number 1 in the group and thus have 2 points to advance. In the main round, the opponents will be France and Denmark. These matches will be on Monday and Tuesday.

All matches can be streamed on the IHF’s youtube page, “IHF Competitions”, if you are based in the Faroe Islands.
