Five out of six parties take responsibility!

Recently, the parties in Faroe Islands have agreed that changes must be made to our constitutional status if we are to have any chance of functioning as a country in the world. The issue of WTO membership is the latest example that we must make changes.

What it’s all about is that the Faroe Islands get the right to self-determination, foreign policy powers and the opportunity to become members of international organizations that we need. That’s the goal. Five of the six parties agree to proceed.

The intention has been to reach a broad agreement on this – preferably a national agreement. But no! The Social Democratic Party does not want to take responsibility and make the changes that are necessary for us to work on an equal footing with other countries. He ran away as soon as the opportunity arose.

This is despite the fact that the changes that the parties together will fight for will give Faroe Islands better opportunities to conclude trade agreements and other agreements that will benefit Faroe Islands and bring about large revenue opportunities.

The Union Party has opposed this because it does not want to make changes to the constitutional situation, and with its campaigns of terror it is now trying to prevent these plans. So we know the good old Union Party again.

When only one of the six parties has left the negotiating table so early in the process, the question must be asked: Who is irresponsible? Are they the parties that want to win Faroe Islands greater opportunities on the international stage – or the party that ran away before the process had really started?

No matter how it turns out, the “stunt” of the Union Party is very sad. Because the Liberal Alliance knows that our negotiating position will deteriorate if there is internal turmoil in Faroe Islands.

Instead of working constructively with all the other parties in the parliament, the Union Party is putting the future opportunities of the Faroe Islands at risk.

That must not happen! We face a historic opportunity to win the Faroe Islands the right to self-determination and the necessary foreign policy powers. Let’s stand together for it!
