John preaches in the Old Testament
The national holiday of Faroe Islands is a formative part of the identity of the Faroese. On Easter Sunday, the Parliament will be set up, and a new session will begin. Members of Parliament, government officials and officials march with the priests from the Parliament House to Hafnarkirkja. After the service, we will walk down to Tinghúsvøllin, where choir singing will add to the moment.
The parade is a rich tradition. The picture speaks for itself. The political system and the Folk Church have in common that we democratically build a country, develop the country and create values and content in people’s lives. It is a conscious cooperation, where the political authorities and the church are aware of their respective tasks and respect each other’s rights in a given area. The series follow, but do not overlap.
It is the oldest of the younger priests in office in the Faroese Folk Church who preaches on Olavsøkan. This year it is Jóannes Purkhús who leads the service.
Jóannes was ordained on 1 May 2015, when he also accepted the call as parish priest of Eystan Múli, which includes the parishes of Viðareiði, Hvannasund, Svínoy, Kirkja and Hattarvík. In addition to serving as a parish priest, Jóannes has since 2019 been a doctoral student in the New Testament at the University of Münster in Germany. This research work is now well underway, and the doctoral thesis is scheduled to be submitted this autumn.
We wish Jóannes joy, happiness and the Lord’s blessing with the sermon and service on Easter Sunday.
