Jon Hestoy appointed as head coach of Havnar Svimjifelag.
After serving as interim head coach for four months, Jon Hestoy has now signed a contract with Havnar Svimjifelag until the 2027 Island Games, which will be held in Faroe Islands.
Jon is 65 years old, born and raised in Tvøroyri. He is married to Susann and has four children and five grandchildren.
He is a qualified printer and has run his own printing house, Føroyaprent, for 41 years. Jon has been part of Faroese swimming for more than sixty years.
His swimming career began in the small 12.5m pool on Tvøroyri and reached its peak when he swam in Mission Viejo in Los Angeles with the famous American coach
Mark Schubert and for the Danish club AGF in the 80s, while he was studying to be a printer in Aarhus.
During this period he set nine Danish records: in the 200m freestyle, 400m mixed, 800m freestyle and 1500m freestyle.
He also won a bronze medal in the 200m freestyle at the Nordic Championships in 1979.
Jon also set a world record when he swam 89,174 meters in 24 hours in Aarhus in 1982.
Jon has previously, in two rounds, been coach of Havnar Svimjifelag, and has
been chairman of the Swimming Federation of Iceland for 15 years and vice-president of the ISF for 6 years.
He has been a member and vice-chairman of European Aquatics Open Water from 1998 to 2021 and a member of World Aquatics Open Water from 2013 to 2017.
Havnar Svimjifelag is the largest swimming club in Faroe Islands and has over 400 members, ranging from skipping and playing for 5-6 years old and up to the movement team, where swimming is considered up
in old age. The club was founded in 1938 and started in a covered shed, where a tennis court is today.
The activity grew when the outdoor shed was opened in Gundadali in 1959 and even more when the indoor 25 meter shed opened in 1982.
Today, Havnar Svimjifelag has world-class conditions at the new Olympic long jump.
The club has good gymnasts on the competition teams, who practice up to several times a day.
We wish Jon good luck in his work and look forward to working with him.
