Made up party political crap from the KvF

On Thursday, KvF broadcast news from a debate on the statehood, which took place in the Folketing on Tuesday.

Various issues of principle were discussed, but what KvF made news was this: “The foreign policy of the Commonwealth will remain unchanged. The Faroe Islands and Greenland will not be allowed to take over the foreign policy, says Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen”.

This was of course wind in the sails of certain forces. “It won’t be up to Mette to decide!!”, wrote Annika Olsen.

And more people are coming after her:

”The fact that no one is rebelling against the disgusting imperialism says a lot about the Faroese fragility. Can the Faroese really be so poorly informed that they do not know what this means for the culture of Faroe Islands?”

”Denmark will not let the Faroe Islands develop so much that we can demand a solution.”

And so on. People know the ram.

Completely wrong

What KvF chose to focus on was the answer a Danish politician received when he asked the Prime Minister if she imagined that the Faroe Islands would eventually take over foreign and defense policy in a more equal cooperation between the two countries.

Mette F replied:

“In relation to foreign and security policy and the construction of the Realm in general, Denmark is not entering into the cooperation with a desire to change it (…) but we try to the best of our ability to be respectful in our response when one of the two countries says that there is something we want to change. It is in this light that we should see that we have activated the §6 Committee, the dispute resolution committee. This is the first time in our history that we have done so, and it is actually with a view to ensuring elbow room that is not currently available to the Faroe Islands in terms of independent membership of the WTO, and which could perhaps also be transferred to other areas, including Nordic cooperation.”

She said – as so often before – that she herself has no wish for major changes, but that she both wants and tries to meet the wishes of the Faroe Islands. As the WTO case is an example. And she said nothing about the Faroe Islands not being allowed to take over foreign policy.

What KvF broadcast was not true news. It was a politically colored, fabricated story that could be used – and was used – as a party political crutch.
