NATO members visit the Faroe Islands

The Icelandic Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Labor have this week co-hosted a delegation of just under 40 MPs from NATO member states.

The program included an introductory event at Hotel Føroyar, where the Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee, Bjarni Hammer, welcomed the guests and spoke about the broad political agreement in the Faroe Islands to support NATO and the importance of cooperation and solidarity these days. The Minister of State for Preparedness and Security, Bjarni K. Petersen, reported on his area of responsibility and in addition, officials and representatives of the National Academy of Sciences of Iceland gave short presentations on the Faroese priorities in the field of security policy, crisis management in the Faroe Islands and the activities of Arctic Commando in the Faroe Islands.

The route also went down to Sornfell, where Landsverk showed the delegation around and told about the historic NATO base as well as the upcoming NATO radar. The delegation then visited the Atlantic Airways Aviation Academy, where they had the opportunity to try the advanced helicopter and aircraft simulators first hand.

The delegation, which is on an introductory tour of various NATO countries, came from a similar visit to Denmark to Faroe Islands, from where yesterday went on to Iceland.
