The defense will be more present in Greenland
Throughout the summer, the Danish Defense Forces will increase their presence in Greenland and the Arctic to conduct exercises. They send F-16 fighter jets, helicopters and a frigate.
This is written by the Government, the Greenlandic government, on its website on Thursday.
Here, among other things, the special forces go to get used to the winter routine.
The security situation requires that the Defense Forces train their ability to operate in and around Greenland. It has been a priority for the government to ensure local participation, says Minister for Foreign Affairs and Research Vivian Motzfeldt in a press release.
Students from the Arctic Basic Education will also be involved in strengthening land defense of critical infrastructure.
Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen from the Liberal Alliance adds in the press release that it has long been a priority for him to strengthen security in the Arctic.
– And I greatly appreciate the close cooperation I have with the government of Greenland, he says.
The increased presence of the armed forces must be done in view of the local conditions and the special security policy challenges in Greenland, he says.
The Defense Forces will also have various events to help give the Greenlandic people insight into their work.
This will be done, among other things, by allowing Greenlanders to board Danish warships to show them off, and so they can get an insight into the everyday life of the crew.
