The Faroe Islands are the third best in the world

World history is written in Poland. The Faroe Islands have won bronze in the World Cup in handball for the U-21 national team.

The Faroe Islands won by one goal, 27-26, against Sweden, and the best player in the bronze match was the Faroese goalkeeper Aleksandar “Sasha” Lacok from Vestmanna chosen to be. He saved 17 times, and his save percentage was 36. Now he will try his hand at Swiss handball.

Halftime score was 12-12, after Sweden was ahead 12-9 for a while. The Faroe Islands were never ahead until the second half was ten minutes old. So they managed to win the lead, and the Faroes never looked back. For a while the lead was five goals – 25-20 – but the last few minutes the lead narrowed again. The Swedes never managed to equalize again, and when the Polish referees trickled for the last time, the celebration was enormous in the Faroese camp.

The celebration is great in the Faroese handball world, in the Faroese sports world, in Faroe Islands in general and the whole sports world is amazed at the Faroese achievement, which is a real feat.

Compared to the semifinal against Portugal, the Faroese players were as confident in defense as on Friday night, and Sasha played as well as he did on Friday night. The Faroes abused some free kicks, but in the attack there were much fewer errors than against Portugal.

This was the last game for these men on the U-21 national team. Several of them will certainly be in the squad when the Icelandic national team participates in the European Championship finals after the turn of the year. In the preliminary round they will play in Norway.

More players already represent clubs abroad, and there is no doubt that the performance in the World Cup final will increase the interest of foreign clubs for Faroese players.

The Faroese goalscorers: Óli Mittún 9, Ísak Vedelsbøl 6, Trúgvi Hávardsson: 2, Óla Jákup Gaard Olsen 2, Rókur Ziskason 2, Tóki Friðriksson 1, Sofus í Selvindi Nattestad 1, Niklas Gaard 1, Búisen Djur, 1 Høgni Heinason 1 and Høgni Højsted 1

The Faroese will receive the bronze medals later tonight. It will be after the final between Denmark and Portugal, which will be at 18.30.
