Thursday will be the quarter-finals against Slovenia.
It felt mostly like a training match when the U-21 men of Denmark and Faroe Islands today played in the European Championship final in Poland.
This was the case, because after the Faroese victory against France yesterday it was clear that both Denmark and the Faroe Islands will play in the quarterfinals on Thursday.
After yesterday’s victory, the Faroese coaches said that some of those who had been most on the pitch so far would not have a special role today. Óli Mittún was only on the pitch when he converted a free kick, and Alaksandar Lacok and Ísak Vedelsbøl were not on the pitch today.
Now it is clear that the Faroe Islands will play a quarterfinal against Slovenia on Thursday, and that Denmark will play a quarterfinal against Norway. Slovenia won 37-31 against Hungary earlier today. The match against Slovenia will take place on Thursday at 17.30.
Today’s loss was the first for the Faroese team in this final. However, there is no reason to hang your head, although the Faroe Islands lost 41-32 after the halftime score 20-17 to Denmark.
The Faroe Islands were leading 4-2 and then Denmark was leading. Sometimes the difference was three goals in the first half, but then the Faroe Islands pulled back. Early in the second half the difference increased to four goals, and as the second half progressed the difference increased and especially the last quarter.
From the Faroese perspective, it was nice that so many were on the pitch, and that there were so many different goalscorers.
Top scorer was Óla Jákup Gaard Olsen, who was right wing scored six goals in seven attempts. He was voted man of the day after the game.
