Why do we celebrate Constitution Day?

Constitution Day is celebrated today, June 5, every year throughout the country.

The day commemorates the signing of the Danish Constitution in 1849, marking the beginning of constitutional governance in Denmark and its territories, including the Faroe Islands.

Various events and activities, such as talks, cultural performances, and social gatherings, take place throughout the islands.

Public offices and some businesses are closed so that citizens can join in the celebration.

Constitution Day sheds light on the common constitutional history and the importance of democracy and civil rights in the Faroese society.
