With Faroese fish to Brazil

University of Holm Johannesen:

Finally, Faroese companies can again export fishery products to Brazil.

This is an exciting and sought-after business opportunity for Faroese export companies, because the salted fish market in the most populous country in South America is large and good.

There are over 210 million people, demand for fishery products, including salmon, is high, and the purchasing power is generally good.

Norwegian, Icelandic and Danish exporters have long had access to export fishery products to Brazil, and now Faroese exporters can finally compete with competitors in other countries on the Brazilian market.

Hard work

Brazil is not a completely foreign market for Faroese fish exporters.

The Faroe Islands have previously exported a lot of shellfish directly here, up to 35 thousand tons annually, but for a long time this has not been possible, because there has been no approval between the food authorities in both countries.

The approval is now available and was handed over to the Faroe Islands today. The Brazilian approval is an example of how difficult it can be to open markets for Faroese products.

The National Board of Health, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Labour, the Icelandic Chamber of Commerce and the Icelandic Fish Buyers Association have worked together for many years to remove this trade barrier, and this has now been achieved after more than twelve years of focused work.

May have multiple access points

It is necessary to continue to work for better and more flexible market access and remove tariff barriers, so that our exporters have the same opportunities as competitors in other countries, and otherwise have the opportunity to sell elsewhere when individual markets are difficult.

In recent years, the Government has invested a lot of energy in achieving smoother trade access in Europe, Asia and the USA. Last autumn, market access in China was expanded to include caught fish, fish oil and fish meal.

The Faroe Islands and the EU have signed a memorandum of understanding that will help to further develop trade relations. And Export Faroe Islands is slowly starting to work, which should help pave the way for Faroese companies on foreign markets.

This health approval between the Faroe Islands and Brazil will undoubtedly contribute to making the heavy work more convenient.
