Mathis Bolly: A Journey Between Two Worlds

Thirteen years ago, Mathis Bolly faced a pivotal decision that would shape his football career. Now, as he prepares for tonight’s World Cup showdown between Norway and the Ivory Coast, he finds it impossible to choose between the two nations that have both played significant roles in his life.

“It’s a unique situation for me,” Bolly told VG, a hint of nostalgia in his voice. “Having played for both countries, this match holds a special meaning.”

Bolly has been anticipating this moment ever since it became likely that Norway and the Ivory Coast would cross paths in the knockout stage. Yet, when asked to pick a side, he chuckles, “You can’t put me in that position!”

“I admire both teams. It’s a moment I’ve been waiting for,” he continued. “I know players like Aursnes and Holmgren Pedersen from our time together. Naturally, I root for those I’ve played alongside, but I also carry the memory of representing the Ivory Coast at a World Cup.”

“There’s no losing in this,” he adds with a smile. “I hope the best team wins tonight.”

As the clock ticks down to kick-off, Bolly, now 35, reflects on the pivotal choice he made years prior between two identities. Born and raised in Oslo, he began his football journey representing Norway at the G19 level, even making waves as a promising player for the U21 team. However, it was his burgeoning success in the Bundesliga that caught the attention of the Ivorian national selectors.

“Making that decision was one of the hardest moments in my life,” Bolly admits. As someone deeply rooted in Norwegian culture, the choice to represent the Ivory Coast felt momentous. With a father hailing from the West African nation and a childhood enriched by visits to its capital, Abidjan, he felt an irresistible pull towards the Ivory Coast.

“Growing up, it was the Ivory Coast I followed. They were in the World Cup spotlight, with legends like Didier Drogba, Salomon Kalou, and Yaya Touré lighting up the stage. They inspired me,” Bolly recounts fondly.

After substantial reflection, he ultimately chose to don the Ivorian jersey during the qualifying round for the 2014 World Cup. “It felt like stepping away from Norway, which is a peculiar sensation for a Norwegian,” he explains, “yet I couldn’t pass up the chance to play alongside those stars.”

Bolly made his debut in qualifiers and was fortunate enough to be selected for the last World Cup featuring a golden generation of Ivorian talent. “It was surreal, stepping onto the pitch with heroes from my childhood. I was just getting started, yet I felt included in the team,” he recalls. The experience was grand, despite the disappointment of the team failing to progress beyond the group stage.

Fast forward to today, and Bolly observes a fresh wave of talent within the Ivorian squad. “It feels like a new beginning. This team has a different vibe, especially with so many young players. The former stars were towering figures; this group works hard for one another,” he notes, reflecting on his five caps for the national team.

Bolly draws parallels between Norway and the Ivory Coast. “Both nations cherish football and are culturally diverse,” he asserts. Yet he points out a significant difference: “For many young players in Ivory Coast, football represents a pathway to a better life. They start their journeys at a much younger age.”

Indeed, many aspiring Ivorian players look to leave their homeland early to pursue football careers, often from challenging circumstances. “For them, it’s a make-or-break opportunity,” Bolly explains. “There’s little room for error; the realities of life back home provide limited alternatives.”

As he delves deeper, Bolly emphasizes the shared love for football across both cultures. “Both countries embrace diverse backgrounds. An Ivorian, like a Norwegian, can embody many identities,” he explains.

Yet, he also acknowledges the misconceptions. “There’s a stereotype in Europe that Ivorian players are predominantly big, strong forwards. But what we want are those technically skilled midfielders,” he clarifies.

Looking toward the future, he sees potential stars emerging in this new generation. Players like Oulaï and the highly anticipated Yan Diomandé are capturing attention. “Diomandé is one to watch; he’s full of potential, just like Nusa from Norway,” Bolly asserts.

As he prepares to watch the match unfold, the stakes are high, and the memories of his own journey resonate deeply. In this high-stakes clash between Norway and the Ivory Coast, Mathis Bolly’s story exemplifies the intertwining threads of loyalty and passion, revealing the beauty of a sport that transcends borders.
