Supertanker Rudolf Samojlovitj Arrives at Danish Shipyard Amid Controversy

The towering supertanker, Rudolf Samojlovitj, has docked at the Fayard shipyard in Denmark for servicing. Stretching an impressive 299 meters, this vessel is not only capable of cutting through ice but also plays a significant role in transporting liquefied natural gas (LNG) from Siberia, all while flying the Bahamian flag.

In a striking report from Danwatch, it was noted that Fayard is the only shipyard in Europe that accepts vessels carrying Russian LNG, a fact that has drawn considerable ire and criticism, including from Denmark’s Prime Minister, Mette Fredriksen.

    Politicians Protest

Recently, more than a hundred European lawmakers expressed their concerns by penning a letter to the shipyard. Karin Karlsbro of the Liberal Party stated, “By servicing these ships, you enable Russia to continue exporting and generating income.”

While the Danish shipyard declined to provide an interview, it communicated through written responses, emphasizing its adherence to current regulations. The company defended its actions by pointing out that the Rudolf Samojlovitj is critical for ensuring safe gas deliveries to France, Belgium, and the Netherlands. They underscored the necessity of servicing such vessels to maintain maritime safety in European waters.

“It is not we who create policy; we merely follow it. It may be an inconvenient truth, but those same politicians who facilitated record-high gas imports from Russia are now reluctant to ensure that gas can enter Europe safely,” the shipyard stated.

    Short-Term Interests

Karin Karlsbro, serving as the European Parliament’s chief negotiator for economic support and trade with Ukraine, expressed a desire for a comprehensive ban on all trade with Russia. However, she acknowledged the challenges of forging a unified stance within the EU, largely due to the diverse short-term interests of its member nations.

“This underscores the crucial role each of us plays,” she asserted. “Whether in business, sports, or the cultural sphere, we must ask ourselves: ‘What can I do to support Ukraine and end Putin’s aggression?’”

It’s worth noting that beginning in January 2027, the import of liquefied natural gas from Russia into the EU will be banned, which will also extend to servicing transport vessels like the Rudolf Samojlovitj.
