A Race Against the Elements: The Evolution of Skjutskjutet
The concept of the Skjutskjutet was born from the imagination of renowned sports journalist Sven “Plex” Petersson, with the inaugural competition taking place at Valborg in 1976. “We wanted to demonstrate that downhill skiing could flourish in Sweden,” recalls Nalle Hansson, an enduring figure in the event since its inception. “Our goal was to promote speed competitions and make them accessible to everyone.”
Adjusting to Nature’s Whims
Traditionally, the Skjutskjutet began at Stendalsravinen, with the exhilarating finish line set in Ullådalen. However, in recent years, the event has shifted to Rödkullen. This season, the competition will take place in the Saddle area, a necessary move driven by an unseasonably low snowpack.
“We’re thrilled that we could relocate the competition rather than cancel it outright,” expressed Martina Fortkod from the Åre Slalom Club. This adaptability not only preserves the spirit of the event but also highlights the community’s commitment to keeping the thrill of downhill racing alive, despite the unpredictable whims of winter weather.
