One of the most intriguing possibilities for Andoni Iraola’s next chapter is a return to Athletic Club.

In March, Ernesto Valverde announced he would step down as manager, concluding his latest four-year tenure in Bilbao. The decision sent ripples through the club and its loyal supporters.

For Iraola, a native of the Basque Country, the ties run deep. He made an impressive 510 appearances for Athletic between 2003 and 2015, solidifying his place in the club’s history. Reports suggest that his family’s desire to return to Spain has played a significant role in his decision to leave Bournemouth.

In response to Valverde’s departure, Iraola expressed a mix of surprise and sentiment. “It affects me probably as a supporter because I support the club,” he remarked, acknowledging his long history with Athletic. “I’ve been playing there for a lot of years, and it’s been a surprise for me. Ernesto is my biggest reference in football. It’s a decision he has made, but aside from the supporter side, it doesn’t affect me.”

His assistant, Smith, weighed in, noting the foundational role Athletic has played in Iraola’s development as a coach. “It’s the club where he learned many of his footballing principles. A lot of the elements of his game come from Marcelo Bielsa’s Athletic team,” he pointed out. “That job is available if he wants to go back to Spain, and there will be a massive emotional pull for it.”

However, the interest from Spain may not be confined to Bilbao alone. At Real Madrid, Alvaro Arbeloa took over from the dismissed Xabi Alonso in January. Yet, the situation at the La Liga giants is tense; they currently trail leaders Barcelona by nine points with just seven matches remaining and recently faced elimination from the Champions League at the hands of Bayern Munich.

Could Iraola be enticed by the prospect of managing a star-studded Real Madrid squad with access to a substantial transfer budget? Or might he prefer to hone his skills in Germany with Bayer Leverkusen before tackling bigger challenges?

As summer approaches, where Iraola’s journey leads next could very well unfold as one of the most captivating narratives in the world of football.
