Maintenance Update from Olkiluoto Nuclear Power Plant

On Friday, the maintenance work on the Olkiluoto 2 reactor, which lasted approximately ten days, officially concluded.

Looking ahead, operator Teollisuuden Voima (TVO) has announced that the annual maintenance for the Olkiluoto 1 (OL1) reactor is set to commence this Sunday. This critical process is expected to take around 55 days, with the reactor slated to resume operations by mid-June.

In a press release earlier this month, TVO elaborated on the upcoming extended shutdown of OL1, citing it as necessary for executing multiple extensive tasks and significant modifications to the plant.

“Annual outages require substantial effort and meticulous planning. Their success hinges on the collaboration of various teams working seamlessly together,” remarked Marjo Mustonen, TVO’s Senior Vice President of Electricity Production. “You might say it’s akin to a Grand Prix pit stop: everything is prepared in advance, allowing us to implement the work efficiently as a unified team.”

Furthermore, TVO indicated that the Olkiluoto 3 reactor, Finland’s newest and Europe’s most powerful nuclear facility, is scheduled for its own regular maintenance period, which will occur over September and October.

As the industry gears up for these vital maintenance activities, the emphasis remains on safety, efficiency, and innovative solutions to enhance the plant’s performance.
