Death Toll Rises in Colombia Bus Bombing

The tragic aftermath of a roadside bomb attack on a bus in southwestern Colombia has left 19 people dead, according to local authorities.

In addition to the fatalities, over 48 individuals have sustained serious injuries, among them five minors, as confirmed by Octavio Guzman, the governor of the Cauca region.

Early reports indicate that the bus was struck directly by the explosion, which occurred during the morning hours of Saturday. Images from the scene reveal extensive damage not only to the bus but also to several other vehicles caught in the blast.

This incident marks a disturbing escalation in violence as Colombia approaches its presidential election next month. President Gustavo Petro has condemned the attackers, labeling them as terrorists, fascists, and drug traffickers. He attributes the assault to dissidents affiliated with the former Farc guerrilla group, who notably rejected the 2016 peace agreement.

This latest attack underscores the ongoing challenges Colombia faces in achieving lasting peace and security, casting a shadow over the upcoming political process.
