The Norð Festival, a cultural gem birthed in 2023, has quickly become one of the country’s most cherished events. Over its first three years, it basked in almost miraculous weather for the season. However, this year presented a slight challenge, as temperatures dipped, reminding attendees that a warm sweater, hat, and gloves were prudent companions for a weekend in Viðareiði.

    Exploring the Vibe

On Saturday, an air of tranquility enveloped Viðareiði, with only a few clouds threatening to mar the serene atmosphere. Guests could seek shelter under the many tents dotting the area or retreat to the Hotel Norð, the festival’s vibrant hub.

True to its roots, the 2026 iteration of the Norð Festival featured familiar musical talent from its inaugural year. Performers like Blátt gras, Sámal Ravnsfjall, and Bjarki Hansen took to the stage, alongside festival stalwarts Páll Finnur Páll, Finnur Koba, and Páll Oddur Rubeksen.

Yet, it was two cheerful jazz musicians stationed at the festival’s entrance who really set the tone. With accordions in hand and a beer in the other, they played traditional melodies that resonated warmth and welcome. Perhaps next year, the organizers should ensure these musicians return to greet festivalgoers once more.

This unique festival thrives in both its communal spaces and its more intimate, secluded corners. Despite the organizers announcing a near sell-out crowd, the festival grounds felt surprisingly spacious. Visitors lounged in houses, caravans, and tents, reveling in the atmosphere until the larger concerts beckoned them back to the main arena, only to vanish just as swiftly into the summer night.

Interestingly, this year’s lineup appeared influenced by the inclusion of the high-profile band DAD, who graced the stage of Viðareiði. Securing such a well-known act likely required a significant portion of the festival’s budget, leading to a program filled mostly with acts to keep the crowd entertained until the main event.

There were standout moments, however. While DAD strolled through the festival area unnoticed just two hours before their performance, the same couldn’t be said for Hallur Joensen. The beloved local talent, now residing in Denmark, attracted attention from fans eager to engage with the fishing folklore king of the Faroe Islands.

Joensen delivered a captivating performance with his adept band, enhanced by the presence of his daughter, Jessica Hallursdóttir, and a talented violinist from Denmark. As the sun dipped below the horizon, the mood shifted, signaling the arrival of summer’s end and the impending hay season. A young man quipped, “I expect good meat this year,” a lighthearted comment that cut through the growing chill.

The festival’s anticipation peaked as DAD took the stage and belted out their iconic track, “It’s After Dark,” a song reflecting the essence of their journey from once calling themselves Disneyland After Dark. As night fell over Viðareiði, a poignant realization took hold.

The evenings grow dark once more, marking the close of another memorable Faroese festival summer. Soon, the warm clothes will resurface from storage, and we’ll begin to sort through the fond memories crafted during these sunlit days.

    “I’m looking at the sky
I’m trying not to cry, ’cause it’s over
    They’re turning down the light
    It’s late now
    Wave the last
    Goodbye”

    — “It’s After Dark,” DAD

    “‘Cause it’s after dark now
    And Disneyland is closed
    We’re being served
    Ice-cold beer
    And Walt is our host
    It’s after dark now
    And Disneyland is closed
    The party is over
    The night is here
    Let’s bring out a toast”

    — “It’s After Dark,” DAD
