Rógvi Kárason and Lydia í Lambanum emerged victorious at what is celebrated as the most scenic half marathon in the Faroe Islands, held in Vágum on Saturday.
In the men’s race, Rógvi Kárason, who ran without the backing of a club as noted on the registration list, found himself in a spirited contest primarily with Torbjørn Hentze from Bragdinum. The gap between the two was narrow, with Kárason clocking in at 1:13:32, just ahead of Hentze, who finished at 1:15:17.
Securing the third spot was Mattias Jansson í Lambanum from Roysn, completing the race in 1:22:02.
Lydia Leads the Women’s Race
Among the women, Lydia í Lambanum put forth an impressive performance, crossing the finish line with a time of 1:40:57. Hot on her heels was Anne Havbo, who finished just seconds later at 1:41:03, while the bronze medal went to Bjørt Krossteig, arriving a good half-minute behind both front-runners.
Jens Honored by Frælsi
In a touching moment tied to the event, veteran athlete Jens R. Weihe was honored as a member of Ítróttafelagnum Frælsi in Vágum. A former football player, Jens turned to running following a knee injury, a shift he embraced in 2006. Since then, he has become an integral part of the Faroese running community. At 78 years old, he has completed 16 marathons this year alone, alongside a considerable number of half-marathons and island races. Over recent years, Jens has covered approximately 3,500 kilometers annually.
Frælsi’s tribute to Jens highlights not only his remarkable mileage and dedication but also the infectious enthusiasm and positive spirit that he brings to each run.
