Scottish Cup Winners and Their European Journey: An In-Depth Look

The winners of the Scottish Cup, or, should that team also claim the league title, the Premiership runners-up, will make their entrance into the Europa League’s first qualifying round next season.

It’s worth noting that the non-champions path is notably more competitive. It features clubs that have secured qualifications based on their league standings from countries like Belgium, Turkey, the Czech Republic, and Greece. Additionally, teams that don’t succeed in the Champions League may drop down into this path, including notable sides like Olympiakos, Sparta Prague, Sturm Graz, and Union St-Gilloise this season.

In the current campaign, Hearts found themselves in the non-champions path but were ousted by Benfica. Meanwhile, Rangers, who were seeded, faced a similar fate at the hands of Jagiellonia Bialystok.

Compounding matters, the five-year coefficient for Celtic and Rangers has taken a hit due to the lackluster performance of Scottish clubs in Europe. As a result, both may be unseeded for next season, which would inevitably lead to tougher encounters against teams from more prestigious leagues.

Yet, there’s a silver lining to this narrative.

Should the Scottish champions drop from the Champions League into the Europa League qualifiers, they will have the opportunity to face another team making a similar descent from the Champions League. Notably, this season, Celtic entered the Champions League during the play-off round, which guaranteed them a spot in the Europa League’s group phase.

Looking ahead, however, next season poses challenges as Scotland’s position on the coefficient table continues to slide. The champions will start at the second qualifying round and must navigate through three ties to reach the prestigious Champions League. The stakes have never been higher for Scottish football clubs as they endeavor to make their mark on the European stage.
