In a stunning display of determination, Samuel Pihlström appeared to be in dire straits at the start of the final lap of the 1,500 meters, trailing behind the pack. But the Swede summoned an extraordinary burst of speed, leaving his competitors in the dust as he surged toward the finish line, ultimately claiming second place.
“Look at that rocket! What an incredible comeback!” exclaimed SVT expert Alhaji Jeng, marveling at Pihlström’s remarkable performance.
Pihlström himself had always held onto the belief that a medal was within reach. “I never felt it was over. On the final lap, I had to keep my composure,” he reflected. “It’s absolutely wild. I really picked up the pace and felt strong. One by one, I just took them down. To be last at the start of the final lap and finish second—it’s simply incredible.”
Almgren’s Shout-Out: “Damn, how incredible!”
Upon crossing the finish line, Pihlström joined in the celebration with fellow athlete Andreas Almgren, who had just moments earlier secured a gold medal in the 10,000 meters.
Almgren shared that he and Pihlström had been rooming together throughout the championships. “We have to keep sharing a room, because it doesn’t get better than this,” he joked, grinning from ear to ear.
Pihlström clocked in at an impressive 3:36.16, with the race ultimately concluded by the Netherlands’ Stefan Nillessen, who took home the gold. Commentator Jacob Hård praised Pihlström’s finishing push: “The last 200 meters were executed flawlessly!”
