The Faroese U21 national team kicked off their European Championship qualifiers with promising victories against Estonia, Iceland, and Luxembourg. However, their recent encounters have proved more challenging, facing off against what are, on paper, the strongest teams in their group. The Faroe Islands suffered a hefty 6-0 loss to France in Klaksvík, followed by a 3-1 defeat against Switzerland at Torsvøll.
The squad has been on a journey, recently traveling to Hungary for their inaugural training match, where they faced off against the local U21 team. Unfortunately for the Faroe Islands, they lost that match 3-0.
“We played a solid first half, managing to limit the Hungarians’ scoring opportunities,” reflected Ólavur Mikkelsen, head coach of the U21 team, in an interview with the Icelandic Football Association’s website. “In the second half, however, we fell short and the opposition took advantage. Everyone had the chance to play, so despite the loss, we gained valuable experience from this training match.”
Tonight, the Faroese team will take to the field against France at 20:00. In their previous encounter in October, the French team showcased their prowess with a commanding 6-0 victory in Klaksvík. While the French squad remains largely unchanged, they have seen the emergence of standout talent Warren Zaïre-Emery, who has since joined their senior team.
“We weren’t entirely satisfied with our performance against the French on home turf last October, and we’re eager to improve upon that this time around. To secure a positive result, we need to bring our best game. Our preparations have been thorough, and we gained a lot from our training match in Hungary. The entire team is well-prepared; however, we recognize the challenge ahead and anticipate spending considerable time defending,” Mikkelsen emphasized.
As it stands before tonight’s match, the Faroe Islands lead their group with nine points, closely followed by Switzerland and Iceland with eight points each. France sits in fourth place with seven points, while Estonia has secured two points and Luxembourg lingers at the bottom with just one.
