Bay Collective Secures Majority Stake in Sunderland Women, Paving the Way for Growth
In a significant development for women’s football, Bay Collective has announced its acquisition of a majority stake in Sunderland Women. The organization, which already holds the majority ownership of Bay FC in the United States, is spearheaded by Kay Cossington, a former director of The Football Association.
The acquisition marks a new chapter for Sunderland Women, with ambitious plans for investment aimed at enhancing the club’s infrastructure, expanding its academy, and strengthening both the staff and player roster—all with the ultimate goal of fostering sustainable growth.
Currently, Sunderland Women find themselves in eighth place in Women’s Super League 2, with just two fixtures left in the season. The club has a rich legacy of nurturing some of England’s most celebrated football talent, boasting former captain Steph Houghton among its ranks, alongside European champions Jill Scott, Beth Mead, and Lucy Bronze.
Cossington expressed her enthusiasm for the partnership, stating, “We couldn’t be more excited to join forces with Sunderland AFC and help craft the next chapter for Sunderland Women, a club with such a proud history and strong identity.”
She emphasized the commitment to honor the club’s DNA and legacy, promising to protect the essence of what makes Sunderland special. Cossington added, “We aim to support the players, staff, and the academy with innovative resources, infrastructure, and training tailored specifically to the unique needs of women athletes.”
“This is a long-term partnership,” she concluded, “and our ambition is to deepen Sunderland Women’s connection with fans and partners while laying a foundation for sustained success at the highest levels of the women’s game.”
