Investigation into Arson Spree by Teenagers in Turku
Police in Turku are investigating a group of 14-year-old girls suspected of deliberately setting multiple fires throughout the city over several months. The Southwestern Finland Police Department reports that the teenagers are linked to six separate incidents of arson occurring between October and February.
These young individuals face serious allegations, including aggravated arson and vandalism. According to police sources, they have confessed to their involvement in the crimes, revealing a troubling trend of reckless behavior.
In a related case, a boy of the same age is believed to have participated in two of these fires. However, given that all suspects are under 15 years old, they cannot be held criminally accountable under Finnish law. Despite this, as highlighted by lead investigator Juhani Malmberg, the youths could be held financially responsible for the damages caused.
“The total amount of damages is still being determined,” Malmberg stated. “At worst, the youths will be liable for the damages they caused for the rest of their lives.”
The fires were ignited in various locations across Turku, including a building on Ilpoistentie, an abandoned daycare center on Susiniitynkatu, a parish house demolition site in Rusthollinrinne, and an abandoned house on Päähatekatu. The most recent incident involved a residential and commercial property in Ruukinrinne, as well as outdoor facilities like a toilet and garbage shed in Uittamo.
The arsonists were identified when concerned parents reached out to law enforcement, prompting a swift investigation. As the community grapples with the implications of these acts, the story serves as a stark reminder of the potential consequences that such reckless behavior can have—not only for the youth involved but for the entire community.
