Evan Ferguson has bid a heartfelt farewell to AS Roma, taking to Instagram to announce his return to Brighton following a loan spell in the Italian capital that was marred by injuries.
“No one wants their time cut short, but injuries are part of the game,” the Republic of Ireland international wrote. “Thank you to everyone at Roma and to the fans for the support over the last few months. I wish my teammates and everyone at the club all the best for the future. Forza Roma.”
The young striker joined Roma from Brighton last summer, arriving with lofty expectations, but his time in Italy was disrupted almost immediately by ankle issues.
His first significant setback came in early November, sidelining him for crucial matches against Milan and Udinese. Though he returned, Ferguson faced another injury setback during a match against Torino. After a brief substitute appearance against Milan, he encountered fresh ankle problems that ultimately truncated his season.
Ferguson finishes Roma spell with five goals in an injury-hit campaign
Despite the challenges, Ferguson made 22 appearances across Serie A, Coppa Italia, and the Europa League, amassing 1,078 minutes on the pitch. He managed to net five goals—three in the league and two in Europe—alongside two assists. These numbers suggest a flicker of what could have been had he enjoyed a more consistent run.
Ultimately, Roma decided against activating the reported €40 million purchase option, leaving Ferguson to return to the Amex Stadium with a point to prove as he looks ahead to the next season.
