Racism on the Field: The Mighty Cosmos Speak Out

In the world of soccer, the joy of the game is often overshadowed by a darker reality. For the players and members of The Mighty Cosmos, football is more than just a sport; it is a battleground against racism and condescension that pervade their lives both on and off the pitch. Recently, club chairman Alan Barker reached his breaking point.

“We are calling them out,” Barker declares emphatically, underscoring the urgency of confronting those who perpetuate racist sentiments. He believes that the issue has escalated to a point that demands action from the club as a whole, shining a light on the unacceptable behavior that continues to plague the sport.

Barker reflects on the origins of this harassment, noting that it has existed since the club’s inception but has intensified in recent times. “Football is far from free of racism,” he asserts, highlighting a troubling reality that extends beyond their local field. “Yes, we have experienced it out on the pitch. It exists at all levels, even at the highest echelons, such as the World Cup.”

    “We Continue as Usual”

Despite the challenges faced, Barker emphasizes resilience. He is not aware of any of the racist incidents having been reported to the police. However, he draws the line at personal attacks, which he finds particularly troubling. “We continue as usual, but this is a societal issue,” he explains. “Personal attacks and public name-calling cross a line. If people want to come forward and express their views, that’s welcome—that’s debate, that’s life, and that’s how we progress.”

As The Mighty Cosmos navigate this difficult terrain, their commitment to confronting racism both within and outside the sport remains steadfast.
