Nestled in the Baltic Sea, between mainland Sweden and Latvia, Gotland stands out as one of Sweden’s most enchanting holiday spots. Renowned for its medieval towns, sandy beaches, striking sea stacks, and a relaxed summer vibe, the island welcomes a diverse crowd—from families to cyclists, historians to beach aficionados.

Whether you’re wandering the cobbled lanes of UNESCO-listed Visby, taking a dip in clear lagoons, or uncovering the idyllic countryside on two wheels, Gotland offers visitors a refreshing contrast to the forests and lakes of mainland Sweden.

As summer arrives, many Swedes are drawn to Gotland, the crown jewel of the Baltic, marking it as a top destination for sun-seekers and adventurers alike.

    Is Gotland Worth Visiting?

Absolutely. Every summer, Swedes flock here for a reason. The island’s crown jewel is the medieval town of Visby, a UNESCO World Heritage Site steeped in Viking history and home to delightful cafés and restaurants.

Beyond Visby, the island offers an array of treasures to explore—from hidden caves to sun-kissed shores, picturesque countryside to serene freshwater lagoons perfect for swimming.

    What Does Gotland Mean?

The name Gotland translates to “Homeland of the Goths,” who settled here alongside nearby islands as early as the Stone Age.

The island flourished as a major trading hub in the sixth century thanks to the Vikings, experiencing even greater prosperity in the twelfth century when Visby emerged as a pivotal city in the Hanseatic League.

    How Big Is Gotland?

Measuring 180 kilometers in length and 52 kilometers wide, Gotland is the largest island in Sweden.

Its relatively flat terrain makes it ideal for cycling. Once you venture beyond Visby, winding rural roads and pathways beckon to cyclists, with the ambitious Gotslandleden cycle path offering an impressive 500 kilometers of scenic exploration from Fårö in the north to the island’s southern tip.

What Should I Visit in Gotland?

Visby, arguably one of the best-preserved medieval towns in northern Europe, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its maze of cobblestoned streets, charming timbered buildings, and pastel-colored cottages make it one of the most delightful places in Sweden to explore.

Don’t miss the 3.5-kilometer stroll around the impressive thirteenth-century town walls, known as the Ringmuren, which encircle the historic center. For a deeper understanding of the island’s Viking heritage, head to the Gotlands Museum (Fornsalen) to behold the world’s largest hoard of Viking silver, the Spillingskatten, unearthed in a field in 1999.

Away from Visby, natural wonders await. Explore the expansive Lummelundagrottan cave, famous for its stunning stalactites and stalagmites, or the dramatic limestone sea stacks (raukar) at Långhammars on Fårö. The island’s wild landscapes, tranquil beaches, and a notable connection to filmmaker Ingmar Bergman, who spent many years here, add to its allure. Another highlight is Den Blå Lagunen (the Blue Lagoon), a former limestone quarry transformed into a beloved swimming spot, though it can get crowded on warm days.

For families, Kneippbyn, located just outside Visby, is a popular resort combining an amusement park, water park, and comfortable on-site accommodation. Here, guests can indulge in water slides, rides, and attractions while younger visitors relish the charm of the original Villa Villekulla from the Pippi Longstocking films. A visit to Kneippbyn can easily be paired with a day out exploring Gotland’s stunning beaches and historical town.

How Many Days Do I Need in Gotland?

Three days is generally sufficient to soak up the island’s main sights—one day for Visby, another for the caves and Fårö in the north, and a final day to explore the southern regions.

However, the true essence of Gotland lies in its laid-back atmosphere; meandering down country lanes by bike, lounging on the beaches, and strolling through orchards and woods can make an extended stay truly enjoyable. If you can manage a week, you’ll have ample time to fully embrace the island’s relaxed charm and hidden treasures.

What Is the Best Time to Visit Gotland?

While summer brings the warmest weather and pleasant water temperatures, it’s also the peak season. This influx of visitors infuses the island with a youthful vibrancy, making it an enjoyable social hub.

However, be cautious of “Stockholm Week” in late July, when Visby becomes a magnet for affluent young Swedes celebrating in style, often leading to rambunctious festivities at beach clubs like Kallis and the Tofta Resort.

The second week of August also sees a flurry of activity during Medieval Week, featuring music, dance, jousting, and period costumes. For a quieter experience, May and September provide lovely weather and fewer crowds, often at more affordable accommodation rates.

How Do I Get to Gotland?

Traveling to Gotland is straightforward: you can choose to fly or take a ferry. The flight from Stockholm to the island’s airport—located a mere 4 kilometers south of Visby—only lasts about 30 to 40 minutes and is serviced by SAS and Norwegian airlines.

Most visitors, however, arrive via ferry, which docks conveniently in the heart of Visby. Run year-round by Destination Gotland, two ferry routes—both taking between three to three and a half hours—depart from Nynäshamn, south of Stockholm, and Oskarshamn on the east coast.

Where Can I Stay on Gotland?

Accommodations on Gotland are plentiful, ranging from converted manors in the countryside to beachfront cabins and cozy hostels in town.

Camping also thrives here; for example, Visby Strandby campsite features luxurious glamping tents, seaside cabins, and grassy pitches for tents and campervans, all just on the outskirts of Visby.

If you prefer a more quaint experience, the Liste Gård guest house offers a beautifully converted barn enveloped by gardens, along with a hot tub and bicycles to rent.

For those wishing to stay in the hustle and bustle, Boende Visby provides comfortable apartments equipped with cooking facilities nestled on a cobbled street in the old town.

Alternatively, consider booking a package tour with Destination Gotland, which encompasses accommodations of all types, along with ferry travel.

    Ready to Visit Gotland?

With its cobblestone streets, Viking heritage, sandy shores, and stunning coastal vistas, Gotland showcases a uniquely captivating side of Sweden, distinct from the mainland. Whether you’re immersing yourself in the historic town of Visby, cycling through verdant landscapes, or enjoying family-friendly destinations like Kneippbyn, it’s no wonder why Swedes return year after year.

If you’re planning a getaway, aim for at least three or four days to explore, but if a week is on the cards, you’ll have the luxury to truly savor Gotland’s relaxed lifestyle and discover its hidden gems.
