The Oslo municipality has lifted restrictions, allowing bars to apply for extended serving hours in conjunction with Sunday’s much-anticipated match. Nieu Grünerløkka has successfully secured permission to serve drinks until 2 AM and will be showing the match outdoors.
General manager Johan Haanes expressed enthusiasm about the upcoming event, saying, “We are ready for the folk festival,” indicating that the evening promises to be a spirited celebration of football culture.
In addition to local venues, Oslo city is paving the way for a larger communal experience. A big screen will be set up at Rådhusplassen to provide a free, alcohol-free viewing option for families.
“Our community has shown great enthusiasm in wanting to watch Norway’s journey through the World Cup,” remarked Mehmet Kaan Inan, the city’s business councilor. He emphasized that establishments beyond the city center now have the opportunity to keep their doors open, creating a festive atmosphere across the city.
Preparations are already underway at Nieu, which will open its doors at 3 PM with free entry. With an expanded outdoor seating area, the bar is looking to enhance its capacity for supporters eager to enjoy the match.
As the excitement builds, Øyvind Werner Øfsti, a communications advisor for the municipality, confirmed the arrangements, clarifying that this is a unique opportunity for individual venues to petition for extended serving hours. “While everyone can apply, approval is not guaranteed,” he noted, reiterating the need for individual assessment of each application.
As fans gather to relive the dreams of World Cup glory, many look back fondly at Norway’s victory over Brazil in 1998, hoping for a similar outcome this Sunday. The stage is set for an unforgettable night filled with camaraderie, triumph, and the spirit of the game.
