Fires Rage Across Southern Europe: Swedish Aid En Route

Southern Europe is currently battling a series of ferocious wildfires, with France and Spain bearing the brunt of the flames. In response to the escalating crisis, Sweden has mobilized its resources, dispatching two planes to assist in firefighting efforts in France early on Saturday morning. Another two aircraft are set to follow next week.

The decision to stagger these deployments comes from a careful consideration of scheduling and operational efficiency, explains Christina Jarnlid, spokesperson for the Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency (Myndigheten för civilt försvar, MCF).

The planes touched down in the beleaguered Bordeaux region, now under threat from the relentless wildfires, at around 7 p.m. on Saturday evening. “Yes, the planes are on-site and ready for action; however, they likely won’t be deployed until tomorrow,” Jarnlid shared in a statement to TT.

These aircraft are part of an enhanced safety initiative leveraging resources shared across the European Union, known as rescEU, aiming to bolster firefighting capabilities amid this ongoing crisis.
