Protecting the Ducklings: A New Initiative at Hoyvíkstjørn
In a heartfelt commitment to safeguarding local wildlife, the Municipality of Tórshavn has initiated significant changes at Hoyvíkstjørn pond. The priority? The protection of the vulnerable ducklings that call this serene spot home.
As part of their efforts, the pond is currently being drained to facilitate necessary renovations in the area. Among the modifications, the stones that form a map of the Faroe Islands—a charming feature for visitors—are set to be removed. Unfortunately, these stones have inadvertently provided cover for lizards, which have preyed upon the ducklings.
Moreover, the project has wider ecological implications. The emptying of the pond will also affect the herring that typically inhabit Hoyvíkstjørn. In a proactive move, these fish will be temporarily relocated to the Maritime Museum, ensuring their safety during the restoration efforts.
