Caution Advised as Caterpillar Infestation Spreads in Gotland
At a wind power facility on eastern Gotland, several thousand larvae of the tall processionary spinner have been collected, raising concerns among local authorities and residents alike. This species, long established in southern Gotland, is now advancing further north than previously recorded.
In response to this unsettling trend, the Länsstyrelsen of Gotland has issued an urgent warning, advising the public to steer clear of areas infested with these caterpillars.
Beware of the Hairs
The tall processionary spinner caterpillar is notorious for its shaggy hairs, which they can release when temperatures rise. It is exactly this hair that poses significant risks.
“They possess barbs that can penetrate the skin, and their hairs carry a toxin that leads to eczema, itching, and rashes,” explains Didrik Vanhoenacker, a biologist at the National Museum of Natural History.
These fine hairs can be dispersed over distances of up to 100 meters. Should you come into contact with them, it’s crucial to rinse thoroughly with ample water and to launder any affected clothing at a minimum of 60 degrees Celsius.
Vanhoenacker advises caution in areas where these caterpillars are present. “Avoid touching the hairy caterpillar. If you notice a large number of larvae nestled in the trees, it’s wise to keep your distance and not linger underneath those trees,” he cautions.
As this invasion begins to encroach further onto Gotland, vigilance and awareness are key to avoiding any unpleasant encounters with these hazardous caterpillars.
