Erling Braut Haaland and His Father’s Luxembourg Holdings: A Deep Dive into Financial Maneuvering

Football prodigy Erling Braut Haaland and his father, Alfie, have recently enlisted the expertise of financier Jan Petter Thomassen to assist in managing their holding companies in Luxembourg. Thomassen, a seasoned professional in catering to the ultra-wealthy, is the founder and partner at Lux Nordic—an enterprise renowned for managing significant assets, with a portfolio worth approximately €5 billion.

The connection to Lux Nordic runs deeper. The company is principally owned by Johan Benad Ugland, a farmer and investor from Grimstad, who has reaped impressive returns amounting to over DKK 100 million from Lux Nordic over the past decade.

As a striker for Manchester City and a figurehead for various brands, Haaland’s income has soared, allowing him to establish a private wealth management structure in Luxembourg, whimsically named after the Vikings’ historic plunder. In December 2022, he initiated his holding company, dubbed “Pillage 2,” a venture mirrored by his father with “Pillage 1.”

Notably, former professional footballer Egil Østenstad has stepped in as the “financial director” for both of these enterprises. The value of Erling’s holdings in Luxembourg surged dramatically, escalating from €12.8 million in early 2023 to €29.6 million by 2024. Through Pillage 2, the World Cup sensation owns a Norwegian company named Pillage 3, which oversees investments on the Oslo Stock Exchange.

By autumn of 2024, Jan Petter Thomassen emerged as a new figure within the Haaland family’s Luxembourg operations. He is now listed as a leader among the management team of both Pillage 1 and Pillage 2, alongside Østenstad and two others. Although the precise role of Thomassen remains somewhat ambiguous, he has cemented a reputation as a financial wizard for affluent clients, particularly within Nordic sports circles.

Luxury Finance: The Backbone of Wealthy Scandinavians

Nestled in the vibrant Grand-Rue shopping district, the offices of Lux Nordic Wealth Management offer a serene yet exclusive hub for those seeking tailored financial advice. Since opening in 2008, the firm has catered to a discerning clientele, focusing on individuals who may require an elaborate approach to managing their substantial wealth.

As Thomassen himself noted in a past interview, the firm’s objective is not to cater to the masses, but rather to provide exclusive assistance to a select group of wealthy individuals—especially as the trend of affluence burgeons across Europe.

In reviewing Lux Nordic’s financial records since 2015, it becomes evident that the company has achieved remarkable success. Over the past decade, it reported an overall revenue of €71.1 million and a profit exceeding €17 million. The data indicates a rising trend in managing assets not only for individual clients but also for JB Ugland Holding, which has seen impressive returns from its investments, contributing DKK 113 million since 2015.

Presently, Lux Nordic oversees a significant portion of Johan Ugland’s wealth, with its portfolio predominantly composed of interest-bearing securities and equities. Moreover, the firm boasts its own investment vehicle—the Lux Nordic Financial Opportunities Fund, launched in 2010.

With Thomassen at the helm as chairman, alongside renowned figures from the finance sector, Lux Nordic continues to reinforce its credentials within the competitive financial landscape.

As global wealth dynamics shift and evolve, the partnership between talent, finance, and opportunity stands as a testament to the strategic maneuvering that characterizes the world of elite sports and beyond. The Haaland family’s venture into these financial waters underscores an astute understanding of both competition and cooperation—key tenets of success in today’s interconnected economy.
