Stock Dips Despite Strong Earnings from Nvidia

On Wednesday evening, the tech titan Nvidia shared its quarterly figures, revealing strong performance for the second quarter of its fiscal year 2027, covering the period from April 26 to July 27, 2026. Following these announcements, Nvidia remains a colossus in the market, boasting a staggering valuation of nearly NOK 47,500 billion.

Here’s a breakdown of the key numbers released:

    • Revenue: Nvidia reported $96.2 billion for the first quarter, comfortably surpassing analysts’ expectations of $92.3 billion, as per Bloomberg consensus.
    • Adjusted Earnings Per Share: The company clocked in at $2.22, ahead of the expected $2.09.
    • Net Income: Nvidia’s net income reached $54 billion, exceeding the forecast of $50.98 billion.

These results reflect a remarkable 106% increase in revenue compared to the same quarter last year—an impressive doubling in performance. The company’s data center division, which is pivotal for its AI chip production, generated an astonishing $89 billion, marking a 117% rise from the previous year and now contributing 92% of Nvidia’s total revenues.

    Aftermarket Reaction

In the wake of such robust performance, it is surprising to note that Nvidia’s stock fell in after-hours trading, dropping by 1.4%. The guidance for the current quarter anticipates sales of $108 billion, surpassing analyst forecasts of $104.2 billion, although it is crucial to note that this projection does not include data center sales to China, as reported by CNBC.

There are signs of a slowdown in the consumer PC market during the quarter, attributed to rising prices. Despite the positive figures, the stock’s reaction has raised eyebrows.

    Analysts Weigh In

Portfolio manager Bernt Berg-Nielsen at Stolt Kapitalforvaltning likened Nvidia’s situation to the challenges faced by a world-class athlete. “You can clear the bar with ease, but as it gets raised higher, the cheers become more muted, even as the performance remains exceptional,” he commented. Over the last four quarters, Nvidia has consistently exceeded expectations, yet the stock price has generally declined in the days following the announcements.

Berg-Nielsen noted that the company’s recent pattern of “beat and raise” has become the norm, with Nvidia establishing a reputation for crushing expectations and doubling its earnings compared to last year. However, he also pointed out that the forecast for gross margin in the third quarter has dipped to 74%, falling short of the 75% many analysts had hoped for.

    Future Outlook

The upcoming conference call with CEO Jensen Huang is anticipated with keen interest. It is particularly vital as analysts seek reassurance regarding plans for financing chip purchases amidst rising costs and increased competition from rivals such as AMD and Google.

As the leader in artificial intelligence and chip development, Nvidia’s results are often seen as indicative of the broader tech industry. Any disappointing results may fuel speculation that the AI excitement has peaked. “Nvidia serves as the best barometer for AI usage,” stated Rob Conzo, CEO of The Wealth Alliance, echoing sentiments in the investment community.

Despite experiencing a 13% increase in stock value this year, it starkly contrasts with the more than 150% surge seen in 2024. As analysts and investors continue to navigate this complex landscape, Nvidia’s trajectory remains one to watch closely.
