Embracing the Outdoors: Fifth Graders’ Sports Class at Eysturskóli
Today, the fifth-grade students at Eysturskóli in Havn stepped outside for an invigorating sports class, taking full advantage of the recent snowfall. With the white landscape transformed into a playground, the joy of outdoor activity was palpable.
Meanwhile, at the nearby Fløtir school, students also enjoyed a unique experience, spending a portion of their day exploring the cave nearby—a delightful adventure that added an element of wonder to their learning.
Helgi Winther Olsen, an advocate for physical activity in education and the author of a PhD thesis on movement in schools, emphasizes the significance of incorporating play into the learning process. “The joy and the game are crucial when we engage in physical activity,” he notes, reminding us that the spirit of play can enhance both physical fitness and overall well-being.
Today’s activities reflect a growing recognition of the vital role that outdoor play and movement play in a child’s development, underscoring the importance of fostering a love for physical activity from a young age.
