In a notable display of military cooperation, approximately 50 residents from Eysturkommuna participated in a training exercise aboard the French frigate Auvergne at Gøtuvík today.
These individuals took on the role of civilians in a simulated crisis, aimed at honing the skills of soldiers tasked with securing an area and orchestrating safe evacuations. After participating in the exercise, the group was transferred to the frigate, which then navigated them back to Harbour.
Among the participants was Árant Hansen from Norðragøta, who reflected on the experience, noting how it provided valuable insight into the realities of evacuation during times of disaster or crisis.
Currently deployed under NATO command in the Arctic Ocean, the Auvergne serves to prepare its crew for a variety of scenarios that may arise in emergency situations. According to the ship’s second-in-command, today’s exercise was designed to ensure that the team is ready for any challenges they might face.
The simulated scenario involved a fictional island that had descended into chaos, designated as a “failed state,” with the army’s mission focused on maintaining order and facilitating evacuations.
