In the wake of a tense week, Chelsea manager Liam Rosenior has confirmed that Enzo Fernández has issued an apology regarding his recent comments about a potential move to Real Madrid. However, the midfielder will still sit out Sunday’s crucial match against Manchester City.
Following Chelsea’s setback in the Champions League against Paris Saint-Germain, Fernández raised eyebrows during an interview with ESPN Argentina, stating, “I’d like to live in Spain; I really like Madrid.” His remarks left many questioning his commitment to the club.
Despite Fernández’s apology, Rosenior affirmed that the decision for a two-match internal suspension remains unchanged. The player has already missed the FA Cup quarterfinal against Port Vale and will also be absent for the impending Premier League showdown at Stamford Bridge.
“I’ve had three or four really constructive conversations with Enzo,” Rosenior explained. “He’s apologized to me and to the club. We’ll address the matter in more detail after this significant game on Sunday.”
The manager described the discussions with Fernández as serious, emphasizing the importance of accountability. “I’m not questioning Enzo’s character. Everyone makes mistakes, but there must be a consequence for those mistakes,” he added earnestly. “What I want for Enzo is to move forward and carve out an outstanding career.”
Rosenior expressed hope that Fernández would play a “massive part” in Chelsea’s season following Sunday’s match but acknowledged there are still “a few hurdles” to navigate before his return to the lineup.
When questioned whether Chelsea might be hindering themselves by sidelining one of their best players, Rosenior was firm in his response. “No. I have an outstanding squad, filled with exceptional players. Choosing the starting XI remains a challenging task,” he stated. “Football is a team sport. It’s not solely about individual talents or self-sabotage.”
He continued, “There are certain values and cultures that I believe in, and that this club embodies, which strengthen the team if we uphold them.”
