Ten foreign prisoners currently held in Icelandic correctional facilities are set to be deported, as reported by Morgunblaðið. The majority of these individuals have been convicted for attempting to smuggle drugs into the country.
These are seasoned offenders, comprised of both men and women, who have no ties to Iceland beyond their illegal activities.
According to recent legislation that is temporarily in effect until July 1 of next year, foreign prisoners can be released after serving just one-third of their sentences. Once released, they will be deported and prohibited from returning to Iceland or any Schengen Area country for a specified duration.
To date, 20 individuals have already been expelled from Iceland, while a total of 60 foreign nationals remain incarcerated in the nation. Importantly, those being sent back will not leave as prisoners; rather, they will be free once they arrive in their home countries.
