The potential qualification of the Faroese national handball team for the 2028 Olympic Games poses a significant dilemma for Denmark, according to Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen in a recent interview with Politiken.

Rasmussen plans to dedicate substantial effort to persuading the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to extend independent membership to both the Faroe Islands and Greenland. This step is essential for participation in the Olympics.

The urgency of this matter stems from the Faroese men’s national handball team’s push to qualify for the World Handball Championship in January. If they secure a top 12 finish in the upcoming championship, they will earn a spot at the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles.

However, the IOC’s regulations stipulate that each member country can field only one national team per sport, and Denmark boasts one of the world’s elite handball teams.

    A New “Klaksvík War”?

Rasmussen anticipates that the implications of this scenario could ignite significant public discontent. “This would undoubtedly lead to anger and frustration reminiscent of the Klaksvík War,” he remarked, drawing parallels to the unrest of 1955 when Danish police were dispatched to Klaksvík to quell protests against the Danish government.

Hans Natorp, chairman of the Danish Sports Federation (DIF), echoes the challenges ahead. He acknowledges the daunting task of convincing the IOC to grant independent membership to the Faroes and Greenland. “While DIF supports their ambitions for IOC membership and it would be fantastic if successful, such a decision would carry political ramifications that could spark issues in various regions globally,” Natorp stated in his conversation with Politiken.
