Jógvan Trondesen Andreasen, chairman of the Suðurstreymoyar Fishing Association (SÚF), highlights the vital role of fishing in the Faroese economy, underscoring its health benefits and sustainability.
Andreasen expressed his appreciation for the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Fisheries’ decision to grant an additional 750 fishing days to group 5B this year. However, he advocates for a more permanent resolution that would equitably align all group 5 fishermen with their counterparts in other groups, particularly in terms of allowing the carryover of unused days from one season to the next.
Moreover, the SÚF chairman believes it is high time to reassess the fishing day system, which celebrates its 30th anniversary this year. Following the Governor’s recent directive to the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES) to review the management plan and the fishing regulations, there is a unique opportunity to rethink the framework that governs the annual distribution of fishing days.
