The government is promising substantial financial relief for families with children living on low incomes and those outside the labor market. Christian Rabjerg Madsen, the political spokesperson for the Social Democrats, indicated on P1 Debate today that the anticipated food check will be “measured in thousands.”
In a discussion with DR yesterday, Finance Minister Nicolai Wammen cautioned against specifying a precise figure for how significant the aid must be for families to genuinely feel a difference in their monthly budget. “It’s still too early to pinpoint an exact amount. What’s essential to clarify is that this will be a helping hand—not a comprehensive solution to all financial woes,” Wammen noted.
When pressed by P1 Debate host Cecilie Lange on whether this implied an amount exceeding 2,000 kroner, Madsen responded affirmatively, emphasizing, “Yes, it’s a substantial amount if we want to create a meaningful impact. With the economic resources allocated to this initiative—4.5 billion kroner—we can significantly assist vulnerable groups, particularly the elderly. Many of them face hardships as essential items like beef and butter have spiked by 30 to 40 percent.”
Negotiations regarding the food check commenced yesterday with various parties in the Folketing, and Madsen expressed optimism about the government’s plans. “I hope to finalize an agreement soon, ensuring these funds reach those in need swiftly—ideally before the next general election,” he stated.
