The Faroe Islands triumphed over Luxembourg in a crucial match, a decisive moment in the European small nations chess competition currently unfolding in Cyprus. This victory solidifies their position as one of the top teams in the tournament.

With the latest results, the Faroe Islands and Luxembourg stand out as the strongest competitors in the field. In Sunday’s match, the Faroe Islands emerged victorious with 2½ points against Luxembourg’s 1½.

Looking ahead, the Faroese team will face their third key match on Monday morning, taking on Andorra, the current small country champions, who are ranked third in this tournament.

Høgni and Luitjen Lead the Way

Høgni Egilstoft Nielsen showcased his confidence and skill once again, securing another win, this time against Fred Berend, according to Talvraštelní.

Meanwhile, Luitjen Akselsson Apol also claimed victory, though he faced a bit of a struggle with the black pieces. In a tense tactical position, Philippe Linster faltered, allowing the Faroese player to emerge with the win.

Helgi Dam Ziska maintained his composure in a balanced endgame with the black pieces but ultimately settled for a draw against Michael Wiedenkeller, perhaps not quite precise enough to convert his advantage.

In the top matchups, Jón í Horni Nielsen faced a daunting challenge against Luxembourg’s formidable Elvira Berend but found himself in a position where the match was already out of reach.
