Ja’Marr Chase Suspended for One Game Following Incidents with Jalen Ramsey
Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase has been handed a one-game suspension without pay after a heated confrontation with Pittsburgh Steelers cornerback Jalen Ramsey, during which Chase reportedly spat on him.
The altercation unfolded in the fourth quarter of the Steelers’ commanding 34-12 victory on Sunday. In retaliation, Ramsey grabbed Chase by the face mask and landed a punch, ultimately earning himself an ejection from the game.
In a statement regarding the suspension, the NFL emphasized that Chase’s actions violated principles of sportsmanship, citing a specific rule against such conduct. Although Chase denied spitting at Ramsey during post-game interviews, footage from a Cincinnati television station seems to contradict his claims.
As a result of the suspension, Chase will miss the upcoming home game against the New England Patriots. He retains the right to appeal this decision.
Before the league made its ruling, Bengals head coach Zac Taylor addressed the situation, expressing his disappointment. “It feels like we are trying to make something out of this,” he remarked, evident frustration in his voice. “For someone who has been integral to our organization, Chase has been fantastic—though not flawless. Neither am I, trust me. I’ve made my share of mistakes that don’t get caught on camera. Unfortunately, this one happened to be visible.”
Taylor concluded with a reminder that Chase would need to take responsibility for his actions, emphasizing its importance in his growth as a player.
This incident marks the second disciplinary action for spitting in the NFL this season. Earlier, Philadelphia Eagles defensive tackle Jalen Carter received a one-game suspension for a similar offense involving Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott during the season opener.
According to the NFL Players Association, Chase’s suspension will result in a loss of at least $448,333.33 in base salary.
