Finance Minister Jens Stoltenberg Honored with Japan’s Prestigious Award
In a notable recognition of his contributions to international diplomacy, Finance Minister Jens Stoltenberg has been awarded Japan’s highest distinction for non-citizens, the Grand Cordon of the Order of the Rising Sun. This esteemed accolade was conferred upon him discreetly at the Japanese embassy in Oslo on December 12 of last year.
Stoltenberg’s name was put forth for this remarkable honor by the Emperor of Japan, reflecting a long history of fruitful collaboration between Japan and Norway. His work as NATO Secretary General and his ongoing commitment to strengthening international ties have been particularly emphasized as deserving of such recognition.
The presentation of the award was a quiet affair, with no official press release issued, and Stoltenberg’s schedule remaining unaltered, suggesting the event was kept under wraps. However, the Japanese embassy successfully documented the ceremony, which included a photograph with attendees and a celebratory toast with champagne.
Ambassador Akira Sugiyama spoke warmly of Stoltenberg during the presentation, highlighting not only his significant contributions to NATO but also expressing admiration for Stoltenberg’s book, På min vakt. “On this solemn occasion, I wish to offer my heartfelt congratulations and deep respect to His Excellency Mr. Jens Stoltenberg for his remarkable efforts, now recognized by this grand honor,” Sugiyama remarked.
Moreover, the ambassador expressed hope that Stoltenberg’s wisdom would continue to foster the relationship between Japan and NATO, as well as enhance mutual understanding between Japan and Norway.
Interestingly, both Stoltenberg and the Ministry of Finance have opted not to comment publicly on this celebrated event. Meanwhile, the response from the political arena has been mixed. Opposition politicians, including Storting representative Mahmoud Farahmand from the Conservative Party, have congratulated Stoltenberg. Farahmand expressed disappointment that the honor did not receive greater media attention, remarking, “I would like to congratulate our dear finance minister on this award from our friends, the Japanese.”
Furthermore, another representative, Tor Mikkel Wara from the Progress Party, congratulated Stoltenberg, acknowledging his vital international efforts on behalf of NATO.
Despite the lack of formal acknowledgment from the current government, Stoltenberg’s recognition marks a notable chapter in his distinguished career, cementing his status as a significant figure in international diplomacy.
