In a significant turn of events for the EuroLeague and Spain’s Liga Endesa, Pedro Martinez has been named the new head coach of Real Madrid. The announcement came following a confirmation on Monday, heralding a new chapter for both the coach and the storied club.
The 65-year-old Catalan coach finalized his departure from Valencia earlier in the day, completing a three-year contract with the prestigious Madrid team. Reports suggest that Madrid activated a buyout clause valued at one million euros to bring him on board, coupled with an attractive net salary of €1.2 million per season. This decision has effectively brought an early conclusion to Sergio Scariolo’s reign, despite the former Spanish national team coach having two years left on his existing contract.
Regarded as one of the foremost strategic minds in European basketball, Martinez’s arrival follows a remarkable 2025–26 season. He expertly led Valencia to their inaugural EuroLeague Final Four, while also clinching both Liga Endesa and Supercopa Endesa titles. Alongside Aito Garcia Reneses, Martinez is one of only two figures in ACB history to coach over a thousand games, a testament to his enduring influence in the sport. He began his coaching journey in 1990, making history at just 28 by winning a European trophy, the Korac Cup, with Ram Joventut.
