NEW YORK — As the United States gears up to commemorate its 250th anniversary on July 4, Shannon Lanier finds himself on the fringes of the festivities. Yet, his family lineage carries a significant weight—one of his ancestors penned the words that reshaped a nation.
In the photograph, Shannon stands proudly beside his son Carter, 10, his wife Chandra, and their daughters Kenzie, 13, and Madison, 15. Here, captured by the lens of Nora Savosnick, is a family intertwined with history, as Shannon is a direct descendant of Thomas Jefferson and Sally Hemings, a woman enslaved by Jefferson.
Reflecting on his childhood, Shannon recalls a pivotal moment from second grade when he boldly stated that he was related to one of the nation’s founding figures. The reaction from his teacher was one of disbelief, leading to a swift admonition to sit down.
“My mother came to the school the next day and set the teacher straight,” Shannon laughs, the memory still fresh as he shares it with Aftenposten.
As the nation prepares to mark this milestone, Shannon and his family navigate the complex legacy of their ancestry, balancing pride with the haunting history tied to their lineage.
