Súna Krossteig Hansen was overwhelmed with emotion following the Faroese national team’s stunning World Cup victory over Spain in Trier on Friday night.
“This is incredible. We’ve fought tirelessly to reach this point, and I couldn’t be prouder of how we played,” said the steadfast back, who poured her heart and soul into the matchup against the Spanish powerhouse.
And she certainly has every reason to be prideful. The goal for the Faroe Islands was not just to compete, but to improve with each game of the World Cup—a mission they have embraced with both grace and determination.
After a disappointing loss to Montenegro, the team rebounded spectacularly, toppling the formidable Spanish side with a remarkable display, particularly in the second half.
“It was an extremely physical game. Having faced Montenegro just before, we definitely felt that weariness in our bones at the start. But our incredible supporters really lifted us when we were down by one, two, even three goals. Their energy showcased our mental strength and resolve to keep fighting,” Krossteig Hansen reflected.
Rakul Wardum played a pivotal role in securing the victory for the Faroese in goal, but Krossteig Hansen also made her mark during an electrifying second half, demonstrating her skills against the Spaniards.
“I think I’ll be placed in more one-on-one situations, which is where I excel. We were a bit nervous at the beginning, perhaps hesitating with the ball and not connecting as much as we did in the second half. That shift really made the difference,” she noted, having contributed four goals on eight shots.
With grit and tenacity, the Faroese team has captured the hearts of many, proving that they are a force to be reckoned with on the world stage.
