Mauricio Pochettino took the helm as the head coach of the United States men’s national soccer team 20 months ago, facing the formidable challenge of transforming a squad that routinely advanced to the group stage but often fell short of reaching the knockout rounds.

On the field, the fruits of his labor were unmistakable, particularly in the recent match against Paraguay. The USA showcased a high-pressing, dynamic style of play that left their opponents scrambling. Pochettino’s vision is now in full view, as the team has adopted an attacking approach that emphasizes both skill and aggression.

Adding to his tactical arsenal, Pochettino is fortunate to have an enviable roster at his disposal. A remarkable 17 out of the 26 players in his squad currently compete in Europe’s top five leagues, with seven of them honing their skills in the prestigious Premier League. This level of talent gives the team a fighting chance against the world’s best.

Beyond mere tactics, Pochettino has instilled a new mindset among his players, pushing them to shed any lingering notions of being underdogs. He encourages them to embrace the possibility of greatness, urging them to envision themselves as not just contenders, but potential champions. “Why not us?” he mused earlier this year. “We need to really believe that we can be there. We need to dream.”

While the USA will undoubtedly face tougher opponents than Paraguay on their quest for World Cup glory, this recent performance has fueled hope among fans. Many now believe that a return to the quarter-finals, akin to their memorable run in 2002, is within reach.

As former Wales defender Ashley Williams remarked on Match of the Day, the US brought Pochettino on board with this tournament specifically in mind, driven by past disappointments on the world stage. “They have a set of players who you expect to go far in this tournament, so the expectation will be massive,” he noted.

“If things fall into place for Pochettino and the starting eleven performs at their peak, I truly believe the United States can make a significant impact on home soil. They should be aiming to top this group,” Williams added, echoing a sentiment that resonates with fans across the nation.
