Faroese Court Acquits Woman Accused of Money Laundering

In a significant ruling today, a Faroese court has acquitted a woman previously charged with money laundering. The case, which drew attention due to its implications on financial regulations, ultimately hinged on the prosecution’s inability to substantiate its claims.

The woman, a native of the Faroe Islands, was intercepted at Vágar Airport in June 2024 while en route to Denmark. At the time of her detainment, she was found in possession of approximately 107,000 Icelandic krónur (ISK), alongside 47,000 krónur in Faroese currency and 8,000 euros—equating to roughly 60,000 ISK.

    Burden of Proof Not Met

Authorities suspected that the funds were linked to illicit activities, with the police asserting that the money was derived from at least one, and possibly multiple, illegal sources. However, the accused maintained her innocence throughout the proceedings.

This morning, the Faroese court delivered its verdict, stating that the prosecution had failed to meet the burden of proof necessary to uphold the charges. As a result, the court ruled in favor of the defendant, resulting in her acquittal.

    Prosecution Remains Non-Committal

After the ruling, Kringvarpið reached out to Katrina Thorsvig Hansen, the prosecutor assigned to the case. While she refrained from commenting on the verdict itself, she indicated that the prosecution is currently reviewing the decision and considering its next steps.

Only time will tell whether the prosecution will choose to pursue the matter further following this morning’s ruling. For now, the acquitted woman can breathe a sigh of relief as she walks away from the courtroom without charges hanging over her head.
