As the crisp air of November settles in, the iconic brown bears at Korkeasaari Zoo in Helsinki have officially begun their winter hibernation. According to zookeepers, the two bears—aged 24 and 19—have been retreating to their cozy dens since the start of the month, embracing the season’s call for rest.
In preparation for this lengthy slumber, the bears have indulged in a hearty diet, filling up on an assortment of fruits, vegetables, and oats. Just before nesting down for the winter, they treated themselves to a sweet finale: a feast of fresh honeycombs. Weighing in at a robust 220 kilograms, these bears are certainly well-prepared for their hibernation.
“The winter den has been quiet for several days now, so we are letting the bears hibernate,” noted Susan Nuurtila, a staff member at Korkeasaari, in a recent press release. With the world outside continuing to change, the bears are cocooned in their serene slumber, awaiting the spring’s return.
